Welcome to "Kayray Reads to You", a podcast of me, Kayray, reading some of my favorite children's books to you. The podcast feed is http://kayray.org/audiobooks/kayray_reads.xml
and you can visit my blog at http://kayray.org/
This is the first collection of my recordings. For more of my audiobooks, see these collections:
I'd rather read than edit, so I don't edit my recordings; you get to hear the mistakes and everything (there aren't usually very many). Just pretend I'm right there reading you a bedtime story! :)
The first book in this podcast is "The Saturdays" by Elizabeth Enright. It's about a New York family in the 1940s. I love this book with all my heart and hope you do too!
Next is "Absolute Zero" by Helen Cresswell, a hilarious story about an eccentric English family in 1970s England. This book is the 2nd book in the Bagthorpe Saga. I hope you'll read them all. (These recordings were made in 2002 or so, and the sound quality is much lower than my usual standard. Forgive me!)
And the next book is "Half Magic" by Edward Eager, a wonderful book in which four children discover a magic talisman.
October: The Apple Stone, by Nicholas Stuart Gray, was published in 1969 and is long out of print, alas. My sister and I discovered it in our library when we were kids. The library doesn't even have a copy anymore but I found a nice used hardback copy for sale on Amazon, thank goodness. It's a marvelous story. Hope you like it!
"The Four-Story Mistake" by Elizabeth Enright, is up! Mona, Rush, Randy, and Oliver Melendy move to a big old house in the country and have adventures.
Updated March 5, 2011:
The Talking Parcel is finished! It's a fun story, written by the famous naturalist Gerald Durrell, about three children who travel to the Land of Mythologia and help to quell the Cockatrice uprising. You'll meet Unicorns, Gryphons, Mermaids, and a very charming Toad named Ethelred. Hope you like it!
Updated April 24, 2011:
A new book is ready for you! "The Cricket in Times Square", by George Selden, is a lovely little story about a very musical cricket.
Updated May 29, 2011:
New book! Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, by Roald Dahl. Enjoy!
Updated August 17, 2011:
I've just uploaded an old recording from my archives: "By the Great Horn Spoon!" by Sid Fleischman. It takes place during the California gold rush right where I used to live. I've been to lots of the towns they mention. Hope you like it!
Updated January 13, 2012:
Some new stuff for you -- A very old recording of The Dark is Rising, by Susan Cooper; a video-recording of How the Grinch Stole Christmas; and the wonderful Frog and Toad are Friends.
Updated January 29, 2012:
I've just uploaded three more books in the hilarious Bagthorpe Saga! The proper order is:
Bagthorpes Vs. The World.
(I recorded these Bagthorpe books many years ago. You can hear my now-teenage son asking lots of questions -- unfortunately, I seem to have edited out most of my answers!)
Updated April 6, 2012
New! A very very old recording of The Hobbit.

A Very old recording of Book 1 of The Fellowship of the Ring. (I'll be recording Book 2 for you shortly.)

Oops - chapter 7 of The Fellowship was cut short for some reason. I've re-recorded the ending and replaced the file here. Please download chapter 7 again if you're not hearing the end of it.
